Our laboratory staff works with the latest medical technologies to deliver an extensive range of routine and specialized tests serving in-house patients as well as outpatient clinics, hospitals, medical centers, physicians’ offices, research and teaching facilities. Expedient laboratory examinations are ensured by around the clock rotation of technicians who are thoroughly trained on every instrument and well-rehearsed in best practices, techniques and methodologies, thus guaranteeing optimal results and ensuring accurate diagnosis.
Laboratory services at Nini Hospital include:
Clinical Chemistry | Hematology | Serology - Hormonology - Tumor Markers | Microbiology | Molecular Biology
In the clinical chemistry branch of the laboratory we perform testing from the routine glucose test to the more specialized chemistries of the liver and kidney functions to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of our patients.
Hematology is focused on providing optimal primary and consultative care for patients with benign and malignant blood diseases and disorders. Testing ranges from a routine Complete Blood Count (CBC) to the bone marrow and body fluid cytology and special staining techniques.
Serological blood testing is performed to aid in the diagnosis of infectious diseases after exposure to pathogens, as well as aid in diagnosis of autoimmune diseases and immunodeficiency disorders. In addition, we are equipped to deliver results for hormone levels and tumor markers.
Microbiology is lead by a Chief Microbiologist consultant and staffed with technical medical professionals trained in bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, virology and special mycobacteria testing techniques.
Molecular biology is one of the most specialized and fastest growing branches of our laboratory. We offer a wide range of tests including multiplex polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), a molecular biochemical technology used to rapidly diagnose several medical conditions and aid in the diagnosis of infectious diseases.
2. Department of Blood Bank and Transfusion Medicine
Nini Hospital Blood Bank functions to support high standards of medical, technical and administrative performance, scientific investigation, clinical application and education. It is dedicated to encourage the voluntary donation of blood through education, public information and research.
Nini Hospital Blood Bank and transfusion medicine department provides clinical services to support patients in need of blood component therapy, cellular therapy, therapeutic apheresis, and specialized laboratory diagnostics.
The mission of the Blood Bank is to supply adequate quantity of safe blood and blood components to all patients in need, to establish and promote the highest standard of care for patients and donors in all aspects of blood banking and transfusion medicine, to coordinate and promote improvements in blood banking and transfusion safety and to develop mechanisms for assessing compliance with adherence to the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) principles, procedures and standards.
The main objective of the department is the proper and safe collection, storage, distribution and transfusion of blood and its components:
- Proper donor selection
- Safe phlebotomy procedures
- Promotion of voluntary blood donation and motivation of donors to return for donation
- Ensuring confidentiality of records and providing information to donors
- Optimal testing, preservation and utilization of blood
- Providing properly grouped and cross-matched blood
- Detection of transfusion transmitted infections
- Providing specially processed blood for patients requiring repeated transfusions
- Reducing adverse transfusion reactions
- Ensuring optimal utilization of blood
- Proper preservation of blood and prompt and appropriate disposal of unsafe blood
Range of services:
- All Blood Bank services and testing are available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, securely handling over 3000 units per year.
- All blood components available and prepared in the blood bank are safely stored in specialized fridge and freezer with continuous 24-hour temperature monitoring system with alarm control. These include Whole blood, Packed Red Blood Cells, Fresh Frozen Plasma, Cryoprecipitate and Platelet. All blood units collected in our facility are leucoreduced to minimize adverse reactions.
With two apheresis instruments in the department, we are able to benefit from the following donations and therapeutic acts: Plateletpheresis, Erythrocytapheresis, Plasmapheresis, Leucopheresis, Exchange transfusion and Stem cells collection.
3. Medical Imaging Department
The Medical Imaging Department is committed to improving health through excellence in image-based patient care and advanced, high-quality diagnostic and interventional radiology services. Using state-of-the-art equipment, our experienced radiologists, technicians and nurses perform and interpret more than 25,000 examinations annually. The Department of Medical Imaging supports all the medical and surgical divisions at the hospital and provides outpatient and emergency services.
MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) | Computed tomography (CT) & Radiography (X-ray) | Ultrasound | Breast imaging
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) sector combines individualized care with professional radiology expertise and advanced technology to deliver reliable results. The acquisition of the Optima MR450w ensures that the highest technology is used in the anatomy scans of the brain, spine, heart, abdomen, breasts, pelvis and other parts of the vascular, muscle and skeletal systems.
Benefits of Optima MR450w scan:
- patient comfort; the instrument is built to accommodate a large body frame while being comfortable for small children and patients prone to claustrophobia
- few scans are necessary due to a large field of view
- two-station imaging scans an entire spine in a fraction of a time with multiple contrasts
- 3-Dimensional Arterial Spin Labeling (3D ASL) generates a full-coverage image of the brain allowing for more accurate evaluation of cerebrovascular conditions such as stroke.

Computed Tomography (CT) and Radiography (X-Ray) imaging services are provided using the latest technology and radiation-dose-reduction techniques. CT scan is a non-invasive procedure done by the instrument's rotation around the body to provide two-dimensional X-Ray images, thus aiding in the diagnosis of cancer, cardiovascular disease, infectious disease, bone fractures, and muscle and skeletal disorders.
Ultrasound is a non-invasive, radiation-free procedure which uses high-frequency sound waves to generate images of the body’s internal structure such as the liver, reproductive organs or blood vessels.
Radiologists utilize the latest technology in mammography equipment, ultrasound instruments and MRI scanners to deliver routine or specialized breast screening and diagnostics for women.
4. Pharmacy
The Pharmacy Department provides quality, efficient, safe and cost effective drug therapy management care for patients and ensures that medical personnel are provided with information on selection, dosage and administration of medications. In addition, our department can fill patients’ prescriptions and deliver over the counter medication and medical supplies. While working in close collaboration with the requesting departments, safety is reinforced by monitoring and recording each patient’s response to drug therapy.
